About Elimu
Elimu is building a learning community in Kenya empowering vulnerable learners of all kinds, especially children, youth and women, in achieving their educational and work-related goals. Founder, Nina Chung is based in Ottawa and established the Canadian charity in 2006 after a volunteer posting in Kenya. Projects are based in Malindi where Elimu runs Elimu Resource Centre – a digital hub for learners. The Centre enhances access to education, improves digital literacy in the community and helps youth after high school to find pathways to more meaningful futures through skills development, employment planning and entrepreneurship. They also run the Stay in School sponsorship project that keeps kids from dropping out of school and Elimu Sewing Project which saves girls from forced early marriages with income generating skills. About For the Children

For the Children (FTC) is a philanthropic club at the University of Ottawa that is run by a motivated team of student volunteers. It was founded in the summer of 2020 by Sandra Fang, a uOttawa student who had just completed her 1st year of Biomedical Sciences at the time. FTC is partnered with Elimu to support Kenyan children and their communities and make a difference in these individuals’ lives, support their futures, and break the cycle of poverty. Throughout the year, FTC will be hosting a variety of fundraising events where all the proceeds raised go towards Elimu’s projects. Check our website often to see all of FTC's events, updates, and the progress we make! If you want to learn more, we are active on Instagram (@ftcple.uottawa) and Facebook (ftc.ple). Message from the Founder
Hello everyone! My name is Sandra Fang and I am a third year Translational and Molecular Medicine student at the University of Ottawa. In the summer of 2020, I was browsing through the Internet in hopes of expanding my knowledge and discovering various Canadian non-profit organizations that the general public may be less aware of. When I came across Elimu, I was immediately hooked because their mission to empower Kenyan youth and communities through an educational and entrepreneurial focus highly resonated with me. I got in contact with the founder of Elimu, Nina, and we were both equally as excited to embark on this new journey. Hence, ‘For the Children’ was born. The club’s name is representative of the student volunteers at FTC who dedicate their time towards raising funds for Elimu’s projects to increase the educational and entrepreneurial opportunities available to these Kenyan children. I have always believed in the importance of accessible & affordable education because education can instill a sense of self-confidence and help students attain their maximum potential. We at FTC hope you will join us for the ride as we host fun events throughout the academic year to raise money for Elimu’s projects.
